Job Corps Outreach Newsletter, May 2018

Forestry and Natural Resources at Weber Basin Job Corps

Weber Basin Job Corps will offer a Forestry and Natural Resources trade beginning in June. Now is a good time to apply for this program. Interest is high and spots will fill up fast. This is the only trade that includes a paid internship. Students are paid to participate in a wildland fire crew and can make $16 to $18 per hour. There are physical and age requirements. Check with me for details.

Top 3 Common Misconceptions about Job Corps

In the past three years as an Admission Counselor, I’ve run into several misconceptions about the Job Corps program. Here are three common misconceptions and the reality.

  1. Job Corps is forced. It’s a place people are “sent.”
    1. REALITY: Our policy states that we must inform our applicants that “…enrollment in Job Corps is voluntary for each individual.”  (PRH Chapter 1 Section 1.2-8 R2.d). Just as no one is forced to go to college or forced to work at a job, no one is forced to participate against their will.
  2. Job Corps is where the “bad kids” go.
    1. REALITY: There are high behavioral expectations at Job Corps. Here’s a list of our behavioral policies. Just as individuals can get fired for misbehavior in the workplace, students are dismissed from Job Corps for the same kind of misbehavior.
  3. Results of Job Corps training are not good. (i.e. Students are working fast-food, wages are low.)
    1. REALITY: In March, 2018, our placement services ranked #2 in the nation! We are exceeding our goals with an overall 108% rating. Independent auditors follow our graduates’ wages and we are held accountable by the U.S. Department of Labor if graduates are not making high wages six months to a year after graduation.

This program is always changing and improving. We are self-critical and seek to improve student experiences. Please use me as a resource to present facts to parents and students.

Job Corps Experiences in Video Update, Spring 2018

Here’s a video from some of our partner campuses including Clearfield. It highlights student experiences, trade and employer partnerships, and student skills.

In May, seven students from this service area arrive to begin training at Job Corps. Please consider referring one of your students.

Sincerely,

Kendra Loomis

EnglishConnect is an English-language learning program designed to help members and nonmembers increase their English proficiency in a gospel-centered environment. It’s courses help learners act in faith to develop English skills, which can increase educational and vocational opportunities.  EnglishConnect serves three main purposes:

  1. Help members and non-members increase their English proficiency.
  2. Give participants an opportunity to review and apply self-reliance principles (from My Foundations)
  3. Support families and individuals in becoming more self-reliant by providing opportunities to develop English skills, which can increase educational and employment opportunities.

The Leaders Guide below contains the instructions on how to organize and run an EnglishConnect program in the stake. Although some of the self-reliance materials are used, this program is not one of the four offerings of the Self-Reliance department, but is administered by the Church Education System.
